The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, has challenged Nigerians to produce evidence supporting the terrorism allegations against Shehu Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, made the demand in a statement issued on Friday.
PRP emphasised the need to verify the authenticity of the allegations levelled against the lawmaker.
The party said it believes there is an ongoing campaign aimed at tarnishing the senator’s reputation through false claims and deliberate mischief.
It cited Section 127(c) of the Electoral Act, which provides a penalty for publishing false statements intended to undermine a candidate’s electoral prospects.
“These lies must stop. Those who have evidence of any criminal activity against him should provide such evidence to the authorities who should treat them as the law provides.
“We believe his rivals and detractors feel threatened by the spread and depth of his popularity, and have now resorted to peddling outrageous and libelous falsehoods against him,” the party said.
The statement was issued five days after Buba rejected fresh allegations linking him to banditry, saying viral videos and claims circulating on social media formed part of what he described as a sustained campaign of disinformation and character assassination.
