Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Murtala Asada, has strongly criticized suggestions of initiating peace talks with notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, warning that such moves pose serious risks to the safety and stability of communities across the North West.
The cleric’s criticism came on Wednesday in response to recent remarks by Professor Abubakar Usman Ribah, who proposed government-led negotiations with Turji as a strategy to tackle the region’s persistent insecurity.
Sheikh Asada firmly opposed this idea, urging people in affected areas to reject any plan involving dialogue with armed criminals and instead focus on defending themselves collectively.
“Dialogue with Turji is not the solution. People should not waste time hoping for peace talks with someone who has killed, kidnapped, and destroyed lives. What our people need to do is protect themselves, defend their families, and stand against these criminals,” Asada stated.
He also addressed an audio clip making the rounds online, which reportedly features him speaking with Turji. The cleric clarified that the conversation took place nearly five years ago and does not align with his current views.
It’s worth noting that earlier peace efforts in states like Zamfara and Katsina, where authorities engaged in dialogue and even granted amnesty to bandit groups, eventually failed when the armed gangs violated agreements and resumed attacks on civilians.
