Six men have been detained by Gombe State’s Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly exhuming an 85-year-old man’s body and harvesting his eyes for ceremonial purposes in Kwami Local Government Area.

According to SC Buhari Sa’ad, a spokesman for the Command, the suspects excavated the tomb of Mallam Manu Wanzam, who was laid to rest at Gadam North Cemetery on September 9.

The 39-year-old father of six, Kawuji Sarki, commanded the group, according to the NSCDC. He said that one Aliyu Chindo hired them to remove the deceased’s eyeballs for ₦500,000 each. Sarki further disclosed that after gathering the body parts, Chindo vanished with them, leaving the gang unpaid until the agents caught them.

Adamu Umar, 22, Umar Jibrin Aboki, 21, Abdullahi Umar Dauda, 17, Muhammad Isa Chindo, 28, and Manu Sale, 23 were the other accused. There is still one accomplice at large.

Jibrin Idris, the NSCDC’s Gombe State Commandant, called the incident “barbaric” and promised that the suspects will face charges after the investigations were over.
