The Kwankwasiya Movement and the National Movement (TNM) have been warned to cease claiming membership or leadership positions inside the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which has formally distanced itself from them.
The NNPP stressed in a letter dated March 20, 2025, that its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) concluded in 2023 and should be adhered to.
Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of Kwankwasiya, and Elder Buba Galadima, the head of TNM, were particularly urged to cease identifying with the NNPP in a letter signed by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the founder and chairman of the NNPP Board of Trustees, and Dr. Agbo Major, the national chairman.
In order to allow Kwankwaso to run as their candidate in the 2023 presidential election, the NNPP first teamed up with these organizations. But in July 2023, following the election, the party ended the deal.
Some members were expelled for anti-party acts as a result of the groups’ continued affiliation with the NNPP.
The letter warned:
“You must forthwith desist from this fraudulent and heinous posturing… The structure and leadership of NNPP have, since July 28, 2023, reverted to its original founders.”
The move represents a further deterioration in the relationship between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiya/TNM factions, who were heavily involved in the party’s 2023 campaign.
