Sultan Breaks Silence Amid Religious Tension, Sends Strong Message to Nigerians

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has appealed to Christians and Muslims across Nigeria to refrain from insulting one another, stressing that mutual respect is essential for peaceful coexistence.

The Sultan made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking at an event.

“We must be honest with ourselves that Christians can stop insulting Muslims. Muslims can stop insulting Christians. And that’s how we will live in peace,” he said.

He also cautioned against claims of religious superiority, insisting that neither Christians nor Muslims should regard themselves as more important than the other.

“We are not here to say we are better than anybody. We are not better than anybody. He [God] is the creator of us all. He will determine who is better. And he knows how to do it. So I am not here to say I am better than anybody,” he said.

The Sultan’s remarks came days after Islamic cleric Yahaya Jingir claimed that Christians would have viewed themselves as superior to Muslims if not for the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

Although he did not directly refer to Jingir, the Sultan maintained that no faith should regard itself as superior to another.

He further encouraged Nigerians to restore the culture of looking after their neighbours, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

“Allah created your neighbour for you. Whoever is your neighbour, you know what is required of you to do for your neighbour,” he said.

The Sultan also condemned the circulation of false and abusive statements on social media, warning that individuals who intentionally spread falsehoods about presidents, governors, senators and other public officials would ultimately answer to God.

He called on Nigerians to focus on rebuilding the country rather than advocating its division.

The Sultan also cited the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who reportedly provided refuge to more than 200 Christians inside his mosque during a crisis in Plateau State.

He described the cleric’s action as a powerful demonstration of humanity that Nigerians should continue to remember.
