Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism and the widow of late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was laid to rest on Friday in Lekki, Lagos, after a dignified funeral service at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina.
Her final farewell came at the close of a week-long series of tributes that began on Tuesday at Harbour Point, Victoria Island. Family members, professional peers, and long-time friends gathered to honor her trailblazing career and remarkable contributions to both the media and the nation.
The funeral service was led by Venerable Henry Adelegan, Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral. The ceremony included scripture readings by loved ones and associates with Midun Tobun reading Psalm 91, and Suru Aboaba presenting the Epistle from 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.
Delivering the sermon, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. Pelu Johnson, spoke under the theme of hope and restoration, praising Dr. Abiola’s extraordinary accomplishments. He described her as a “record-breaker who shattered glass ceilings,” acknowledging her distinctions as the first Nigerian woman to earn a Ph.D. in journalism, the first female editor of a national newspaper, and the first woman to become Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of a major national publication the National Concord.
“She stood resolutely with her husband during Nigeria’s democratic struggle, using Concord Newspapers as a powerful voice in the battle for freedom. Her legacy lives on through the generations she inspired and mentored,” Bishop Johnson said.
The Bishop also took the opportunity to call on Nigerian leaders to address pressing national issues such as insecurity, rising unemployment, corruption, and the economic hardships faced by citizens.
The ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries and high-profile guests. Representing President Bola Tinubu was Finance Minister Wale Edun, accompanied by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, ex-Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Nike Akande.
Other notable attendees included Eniola Bello, Managing Director of ThisDay; Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe, the Obanikoro of Lagos; Sir Steve Omojafor, Chairman of STB-McCann; cultural icon Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti; former presidential media adviser Femi Adesina; Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, wife of ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola; veteran journalist Dele Babarinsa; Yemi Ogunbiyi of Daily Times; and Gbenga Adefaye, Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
Following the service, her remains were transported to her final resting place in Lekki, where she was interred amid prayers, hymns, and emotional tributes from those whose lives she touched.
Dr. Doyinsola Abiola passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 82. She is remembered not only as a journalism icon and steadfast advocate for democracy, but also as a woman whose quiet strength and lasting impact continue to inspire generations.
