Nnamdi Kanu leader of the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was found guilty of terrorism and given a life sentence by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
As he concluded his ruling on Kanu’s trial on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life in prison for counts one, two, four, five, and six of the seven charges that the Department of State Services (DSS) had brought against him.
Judge Omotosho sentenced him to 20 years in jail without the possibility of a fine on count three, which involved the offense of being a member of a terrorist organization that is prohibited.
Regarding count seven, which concerns his illegal acquisition of a radio transmitter to support Radio Biafra’s covert operations, company is not registered in Nigeria, the judge gave him a five-year prison sentence without the possibility of a fine.
The judge stated that although the law permitted the court to sentence Kanu to death for the terrorism offenses, he chose to be merciful to the defendant because he was a Christian, despite the fact that Kanu had been disruptive during the trial.
Judge Omotosho mandated that the radio transmitter be forfeited to the Federal Government and that the defendant be placed under protective custody anywhere in the nation, excluding Kuje Prison in Abuja.
According to The Guardian, Kanu became disruptive throughout the hearings, therefore Justice Omotosho had previously ordered his departure from the courtroom.
Kanu had previously submitted three further motions, but the judge had rejected them on the grounds that they were without merit. The matter had already been postponed for decision when the applications were filed.
Kanu protested as Justice Omotosho prepared to render his decision, arguing that the court could not move on as he had not submitted his final written address. Raising his anger, he claimed that the court “did not know the law” and accused the judge of partiality.
Justice Omotosho ordered security guards to take Kanu out of the courtroom after the outburst. In his absence, the judge proceeded to read the final verdict.
