George Obama, the brother of Barack Obama, spent many years living in the Huruma slums in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
George Obama first met his well-known brother when he was five years old. The two got back in touch in 2006 when the US president stopped in Nairobi for a trip through East Africa.
The focus of this post on ZINGTIE will be George Obama’s life and his survival while residing in the slums—a stark contrast to the life of Barack Obama.
George Obama’s struggle to survive in poverty
George has written about his life in his book, Homeland, which differs entirely from Barack Obama’s.
“My brother has risen to be the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Here in Kenya, my aim is to be a leader amongst the poorest people on earth—those who live in the slums.” A quote from his book reads.
George Obama, who lived in poverty for most of his childhood, saw his now-famous half-brother go from Harvard to the Senate and eventually the White House.
He has trouble keeping up with his education.
Barack is one of his three half-siblings born to two American moms.
George was not afforded the same opportunities as his half-brothers and sister, the bulk of whom had studied and lived overseas, despite the fact that his mother, Jael, is also from Kenya.
George Obama left school at the age of fifteen. He used to be in the gang, but he looks after babies and treats his friends well these days.
Criminal lifestyle
Obama has repeatedly maintained that he didn’t commit the crime that landed him three months in prison in 2003. However, he says he has robbed a lot of other people.
Once a thief in the ghetto, he now views himself as a volunteer in the community.
