Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has lamented that United Kingdom authorities damaged her reputation through a prolonged prosecution process she described as deeply traumatic.
Alison-Madueke made the remarks on Friday during an interview with the BBC, saying the 13-year investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) could have been handled differently.
Her comments came shortly after she was cleared of bribery charges at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday.
“I’ve not been allowed to travel. I’ve not been allowed to work. They destroyed my reputation and my integrity,” she said.
The court, following proceedings, found her not guilty on five counts of bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery.
Recall that Alison-Madueke served as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015 and became the first female president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
She was first arrested in 2015 but was not formally charged until 2023.
Prosecutors had alleged that she received kickbacks from oil executives linked to government contracts, including £2 million worth of luxury goods from Harrods, chauffeur-driven vehicles, and access to properties in London and Buckinghamshire.
