It is anticipated that the Nigerian law prohibiting same-sex “amorous relationships” and homosexual marriage, which carries a maximum 14-year prison sentence, will thwart the recent advancements made by the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis formally approved the practice of Catholic priests blessing same-sex couples. This is a significant policy change meant to make the Church more accepting of all people while upholding its strong prohibition against homosexual marriage.
But keep in mind that one of Nigeria’s most extensive arrest campaigns against legalised homosexuality took place in August of this year when police reported that they had arrested at least 67 persons attending a gay wedding.
At roughly two in the morning (01:00 GMT) on Monday, the “gay suspects” were taken into custody in the southern Delta state town of Ekpan, where two of them had recently tied the knot, state police spokesman Bright Edafe informed reporters.
In the West African country, homosexuality “will never be tolerated,” according to Bright.
Pope Francis’ decision to allow Catholic priests around the world to bless same-sex couples seems pointless in Nigeria, given the laws that enforce the arrest of couples there.
It is anticipated that the Nigeria Police Force will make more arrests of homosexual couples who wish to take advantage of the new development in the Catholic Church as a result of Pope Francis’ decision.
According to reports, Pope Francis said that such blessings can be given in certain situations—as long as they are not mistaken for the marriage ceremony.
The Pope restated and clarified the requirement in a new document, stressing that marriage is a lifelong partnership between a man and a woman.
He emphasised that the blessings mentioned above must not be connected to any particular Catholic holiday or religious ceremony, nor should they be bestowed concurrently with a civil union ceremony.
Furthermore, according to Pope Francis, the blessings cannot follow predetermined procedures or even incorporate wedding-appropriate attire and gestures.
Pope Francis has previously attempted to welcome the LGBTQ+ community into the Church. Many argue that it is neither enough nor too much.
The Vatican declared last month that there are situations in which transgender people can be godparents and are baptised as Catholics.
