Trump to reclassify many federal workers

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his administration plans to revise how numerous federal employees are categorized in terms of employment status.

Using his social media platform, Trump stated that from now on, long-term public servants involved in shaping policy would be labeled as “schedule policy/career.”

He explained that this shift is intended to make the operations of the federal government resemble that of a private-sector business.

This declaration activates an executive order he signed on January 20, his first day back in office, and could lead to a large segment of the 2.3 million federal workforce losing their employment protections, effectively placing them under at-will employment terms.

Don Moynihan, a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy, pointed out that by including all employees engaged in policy under this new classification, the scope of potential job terminations expands significantly. According to him, nearly all public service roles are connected to policy in some form.

It’s worth noting that during the closing period of his previous term, Trump introduced a similar plan called Schedule F, which President Joe Biden reversed on his first day in office back in 2021.

At the time, projections indicated that around 50,000 government employees could be placed at risk of dismissal under the Schedule F designation.

Moynihan emphasized that the current order is even more expansive, potentially allowing for the reclassification of hundreds of thousands of staff before any dismissals take place.

Reports suggest that since Trump’s return, over 260,000 federal employees have either been laid off, accepted voluntary exit packages, opted for early retirement, or have been slated for future dismissal.

This wave of changes is aligned with efforts led by Trump and tech magnate Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the size and expenditures of the federal workforce.

Everett Kelley, who leads the largest union for federal employees, the American Federation of Government Employees, representing 800,000 members, voiced strong opposition to Trump’s initiative.

“President Trump’s action to politicize the work of tens of thousands of career federal employees will erode the government’s merit-based hiring system and undermine the professional civil service that Americans rely on,” Kelley said.
