Former Vice President and 2027 presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed concern over what he believes is a possible compromise of his confidential banking information after an unidentified individual allegedly paid money into one of his personal bank accounts.
In a statement released on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku disclosed that the transaction was made into a private account maintained with one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks.
The statement noted that the payment came with the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” even though neither Atiku nor members of his campaign organisation requested, approved, or had prior knowledge of the transfer.
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party described the incident as troubling, stressing that the account in question is strictly personal and its details have never been made public.
He questioned how an unknown person obtained access to such confidential banking information, warning that the development raises serious concerns about the protection of Nigerians’ financial records.
“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement read.
Atiku further claimed that the alleged leak could have originated from individuals with authorised access to sensitive financial information, cautioning that such breaches could expose account holders to threats from kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements.
The ADC chieftain maintained that the incident is part of what he described as a pattern of suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections and called on security agencies to investigate the matter.
He also rejected what he termed efforts to tarnish his reputation, insisting that his attention remains fixed on offering credible leadership and workable solutions to Nigeria’s numerous challenges.
