The University of Ibadan has suspended student activist Aduwo Ayodele, a 400-level History student, for four semesters over a peaceful protest against a fee hike. The institution has also prohibited him from participating in Students’ Union affairs and required him to undergo counseling sessions.
The suspension follows a protest staged by students, including Aduwo, on May 13, 2024, during a Students’ Union event. The students were later arrested by the university’s security unit and summoned before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee on July 2, 2024.
According to an internal memorandum signed by S. O. Oyewumi, Deputy Registrar (Students), the case involves allegations of misconduct bordering on “insubordination/unruly behaviour” for obstructing the inauguration event of the 2023/2024 Students’ Union executives.
The suspension terms include a four-semester suspension, prohibition from participating in Students’ Union affairs, and compulsory counseling sessions. The decision has sparked widespread public backlash, with many questioning the university’s handling of student activism
