In 2024, the United States repatriated a record 61,680 Guatemalans, according to the US state-run Guatemalan Migration Institute.

Following the arrival of the final deportee planes in Guatemala City, the Institute made this announcement.

Four planes from Texas were reported to have landed at an air force installation in the capital of Guatemala on Friday.

One of the planes was witnessed to disembark about 100 people, the most of them were women with little children.

Ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House as president in late January 2025, the increased returns from America took place.

Mass deportations had been promised by the incoming president.

Only 400,000 of the 2.7 million Guatemalans living in the United States, according to the country’s government, have the necessary documentation to legally stay and work.

Officials say that in 2024, 61,680 Guatemalan deportees were transported by 508 planes from the United States.

A total of 55,302 Guatemalans were deported in 2023, surpassing the previous high of 54,599 set in 2019.

According to reports, thousands of Guatemalans illegally enter the US every year in order to flee the violence and extreme poverty back home.

According to projections from Guatemala’s national bank, a record $21 billion was sent back in 2024, which is equal to 19 percent of the GDP of the nation.
