In the two months since enforcement began, the Task Force against street trade in the Idiape market area of Ilorin, Kwara State, has encountered ongoing opposition.
“Despite the combined efforts of the security agencies to enforce the ban on traders, nothing tangible appears to have been achieved,” a state Environmental Protection Agency officer, who wished to remain anonymous, told ZINGTIE in Ilorin on Friday.
“Once the security forces move, the traders relocate to their previous locations,” the sources disclosed.
Additionally, there are compelling signs that the Mobile court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Aluko, which is in charge of making arrests and prosecuting offenders, may raise the penalties levied against those who break the local prohibition on unauthorized street vendors.
“The fine may be increased from N20,000 to N50,000 to enforce the ban,” an official of the environmental protection agency, told the ZINGTIE in confidence in Ilorin on Friday.
The mobile court responsible for punishing offenders has reportedly seized numerous items and levied fines, according to ZINGTIE.
