Alhaji Hamza Koshe Akuyam, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State, has accused Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, of political opportunism.
He alleged that Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed gave the ex-speaker a lifeline when he was stranded after failing to acquire a House of Representatives ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.
He was disappointed that Dogara had turned against his sponsor.
“It is ironic that a man who was politically stranded, had to be rehabilitated by Bala Mohammed, yet today, he turns around to malign his benefactor,” Akuyam said.
Akuyam viewed the current feud between Bala Mohammed and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as a struggle between institutional governance and personal allegiance.
“Bala Mohammed’s ‘crime’ is insisting on strong institutions over strong individuals. If that is an offense, then let history judge,” he stated.
Akuyam criticised Dogara’s political manoeuvring, accusing him of only collaborating with lawmakers when there were money incentives involved.
“For a man like Dogara, who was fortunate to rise politically at a young age, it is disappointing to see him squander his potential on self-conceit and inconsistency,” he told reporters.
In a statement titled “Bala Vs. Wike: Because I Am Involved”, Akuyam further accused Dogara of spreading “wild inconsistencies and falsehoods” in his assertions that Wike manipulated the PDP primaries in favour of Governor Bala Mohammed.
He described Dogara’s action as a desperate attempt to rewrite history and position himself with political allies.
According to ZINGTIE, Dogara said that Wike influenced the appointment of Chief Dan Orbih to monitor Bauchi’s 2018 PDP primaries, which ensured Bala Mohammed’s victory.
However, Akuyam denied this assertion, claiming that while Wike was a shareholder, Bala Mohammed had already established enormous political capital within the PDP.
“To paint Bala Mohammed as a helpless politician who needed Wike’s deliverance is nothing short of a figment of Dogara’s imagination,” Akuyam stated.
“If he has witnesses, let him bring them forward.” Akuyam slammed Dogara, accusing him of exaggerating his political standing while failing to gain his own All Progressive Congress party ticket in 2019.
Recall that the FCT Minister and Bauchi governor have been at odds over the PDP leadership crisis.
Mohammed accused Wike of betraying the PDP by partnering with the APC and demanded his resignation.
But Wike retaliated, labelling Mohammed a hypocrite.
The disagreement between the two is also related to the Rivers State crisis.
