After a flash flood destroyed their holiday house close to Pisa, Tuscany, a German grandmother and her five-month-old grandson are reported missing. The family’s home was submerged when the neighbouring River Sterza overflowed its banks, resulting in tragedy.

While on vacation in Italy, the family noticed floodwaters starting to pour under their door on Monday night and alerted emergency authorities. Rescue attempts were, however, hampered by a language barrier and challenges in finding the family.

According to Francesco Auriemma, the mayor of Montecatini Val di Cecina, the baby tragically slipped into the water as the family tried to reach upper floors of the house, and his grandma got swept away while trying to save him.

The grandmother and child are still missing, but the baby’s parents and grandfather made it to the rooftop and were subsequently saved. The operation is including over 100 firemen, who are dealing with difficult conditions due to fallen roadways and large mudslides.

According to firefighter Nicola Cianelli, the floodwaters were rising “incredibly quickly,” striking the house with waves as high as 2.5 meters (8 feet). Since Monday, the area has seen a lot of rain, and more severe weather is predicted.

According to regional president Eugenio Giani, the Tuscany region has seen extraordinary rainfall, with more water dropping in six hours than usually collects in a full rainy month.

The flood represents the worst weather occurrence in the history of the region.

This disaster comes after severe flooding in Emilia Romagna, which is close, last week, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people and leaving two more unaccounted for.
