Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has given an explanation for why he attended a recent gathering hosted by the Julius Abure-led Labour Party faction.

Baba-Ahmed stated during his appearance on Channels TV’s Morning Brief on Wednesday that his presence was motivated by responsibility, principle, and what he called “a doctrine of necessity.”

He said the meeting was an important step in bringing the Labour Party back together and bringing competing sections together.

“I rose to the challenge,” he said.

“It became necessary the doctrine of necessity. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and everything right in it.”

Baba-Ahmed insisted that he had included all pertinent parties in his interaction with the Abure-led group, dismissing charges that it was unilateral or without legitimacy.

“I assure you that every little step I take, concerned parties are aware,” he said.

“I don’t need to get too much into our internal operations, but everyone that has to do with anything that I do is concerned and is aware.”

He explained that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is aware of Baba-Ahmed’s acts in response to remarks made by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, a spokeswoman for the Obidient movement, who claimed the organization was ignorant of Baba-Ahmed’s efforts at reconciliation.

“I don’t talk to Mr Tanko. I relate with our boss, His Excellency Peter Obi, and he is aware. He probably has been too busy to update the team around him,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He emphasized that his choice to work with the Abure group was a proactive step to mend tensions for the benefit of the party and Nigeria’s democratic future, not a support for factionalism.

“These factions only exist on the pages of the dashed hopes for Nigerian democrats. They have interfered in our activities that is what happened,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed identified himself as a “positive catalyst” who seeks to facilitate communication between all sides.

“The way forward is simple: I called for all parties to get together and talk. When that happens, the press will get the headlines of what was discussed. I’m just trying to make that conversation happen,” he concluded.
