Dr. George Agbakahi has made a compelling argument for the North Central geopolitical zone of the nation to produce the next national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the flurry of political undercurrents caused by the recent resignation of Dr. Abdukllahi Ganduje as the party’s national chairman.

In response to questions during a TVC television program that our reporter watched on Wednesday, Agbakayi, who is also the South East Leader of the Tinubu Support Organization for the 2023 general elections, said that someone from the Congress for Progressive Change, or CPC, bloc of the party should be permitted to become the party’s substantive national chairman for equity, geopolitical balance, and a sense of belonging.

Agbakahi insisted that Ganduje did a fantastic job of guiding the party in the correct path and commended him for his contributions to the party’s stability and growth during his tenure, “particularly with respect to a tsunami of defections that has now come into APC.”

“But you know politics is pretty dynamic and when you consider the internal dynamics of APC particularly in respect of zoning, in politics and even in democracy to some extent, we consider justice, consider equity and all along the national chairman of APC was supposed to have come from North Central, that’s the truth.

“And if you come to look at it, North Central is pretty significant in the political permutation of the coming 2027 elections. Mind you the political contest in the North Central in the 2023 election was very tough in such a way that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu garnered 1.7 plus million votes in North Central. Peter Obi of Labour Party followed a little bit close with 1.4 million, almost 1,450, 0000 votes over there, whereas Atiku (Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP) got 1, 25,000 votes.

“So taking this dynamic into consideration, you really need North Central. North Central traditionally has been a hotbed of APC, mind you even in the 2011 election, CPC which is one of the blocs that made up APC the candidate of CPC Sen Almakura surprised the entire nation by winning a governorship election in Nasarawa state.

“What I’m saying in effect is that I will, in my personal opinion, plead with the party to allow North Central produce the next national chairman of the party. Coming to that there are so many people that are already coming out for this according to news reports.

“But first of all we need somebody with requisite experience, we need somebody with credibility, we need somebody that is charismatic, we need somebody that can carry along members of the APC and also resolve internal disputes which is also one of the major challenges the party is facing particularly now that we have gotten a lot of members from other political parties,” he said.

The APC chairman urged the party’s leadership and interested parties to take advantage of the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting, which is set for July 24, 2025, “to take a firm decision on the substantive national chairman, and somebody who can reach out to established bases like the military, geopolitical base, religious base and demographic base like the youths and women groups in order to forge a united and all encompassing party.

“In my view, we really want the party to look at getting a substantive chairman as quickly as possible because the party has a lot of things to do. The election is coming up barely two years from now.”

Agbakahi told those who were upset by the primaries’ results to put their swords away and support the party’s candidate in order to win the upcoming Anambra guber election, which he claimed was winnable.

“What I will urge our brothers and sisters of APC in Anambra state is to rally round Prince Nichola Ukachukwu, who has become the candidate of the party, I think we have good chances of winning the governorship of Anambra state.

“I think APC has made tremendous inroads in the entire South East. Mind you in Ebonyi state the governor there is APC, in Imo state the governor and also the chairman of Progressives Governors Forum is APC, Umahi is there also in Ebonyi; the young man who is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps (Benjamin Kalu) is from Abia state. What you are seeing is this; APC will definitely do well in the South East because of the current political reality in the country,” he said.

The APC chieftain denied rumors that the party’s implosion could result from the flood of new members, pointing out that the party has a robust internal dispute resolution process to handle such problems.

Regarding President Tinubu’s choice for running mate in the 2027 election, he stated, “In respect of the issue of the vice president I heard my friend who is the president’s spokesman Bayo Onanuga made a commentary on that particular issue.

“He said there is no problem, there are no issues between the president and the vice president and I believe that. And he also said that the issue of vice presidential nomination comes immediately after the president gets the ticket of the APC to run for second tenure; that is the way it goes all over the world, even in the United States.”

Agbakahi went on to say that, given his role in President Tinubu’s victory, particularly during the primary election phase, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep Vice President Kashim Shettima.
