‘Why not Isi Agu’ – Kanayo O. Kanayo defends Air Peace cabin crew uniform

The Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has supported Air Peace’s choice to use Isi Agu, an Igbo traditional garment, as the cabin staff uniform for their flights to London.

On March 30, Air Peace’s first direct flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to Gatwick Airport in London, ZINGTIE recalls that cabin crew members wore Isi Agu.

Reactions to the development have been divided. Some Nigerians have claimed that the airline’s choice to have its cabin service personnel dress in traditional Igbo clothing was a sign of a lack of patriotism.

Kanayo chastised the critics in response and maintained that the airline had done the right thing by dressing in traditional Igbo garb.

Kanayo sent the following video message on his Instagram page: “I just watched a video of Barr. Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, explaining why the Isi Agu was adopted as their cabin crew uniform for the London route of Air Peace because somebody complained, ‘Why Isi Agu?’

“Why not Isi Agu? Should it have been a buba and iro or agbada and everyone would be happy? Anytime anything good comes to the Igbo, people bring in hate speech. We must stop this. It doesn’t get us anywhere. That is the identity adopted by Air Peace and it should be respected.

“Allen Onyema and his brother, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, have done more for the airline industry than the Nigerian nation has done. They should be commended, not vilified.”
