Housewife Mrs. Mariam AbdulLateef petitioned an Ilorin Area Court on Wednesday to end her marriage to AbdulLateef Tahjudeen, claiming they had not had sex.
Mariam told the court that she married her husband in 2016 in line with Islamic law and that they are blessed with a seven-year-old child. Mariam lives at 144 Cemetery Road, Irewolede Area, Ilorin.
However, she bemoaned the fact that approximately seven years ago, Tahjudeen ceased carrying out his duties and left their marital bed after she gave birth to their daughter.
“He does not even sleep in the same room nor touch me, and any time I ask for his attention, he tells me to leave his house whenever I am tired of the marriage,”she said.
Mariam begged the court to end the marriage so she may get married again.
“My husband has been tormenting me with accusations of having extramarital affairs and yet did not touch me, which is affecting my state of mind,” she pleaded.
However, the husband informed the court that he was unable to please his wife because of health issues, which he had been making a concerted effort to treat.
He informed the judge that he still loved his wife and was grateful for her patience and tenacity, and that he was not ready to file for divorce.
“Sex is important in marriage, and any case of starvation of any party should not be taken lightly,” stated Presiding Judge Hammad Ajumonbi.
However, Ajumonbi encouraged the husband to attempt to resolve the matter amicably and counselled the wife to be more patient.
After that, the judge postponed the case until February 20 in order to get a settlement report.
