During the just finished ward and local government congresses, executive members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in each of Yobe State’s 17 local government areas accused the state leadership of breaking the party’s constitution.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Friday at the Olive Petal Hotel in Damaturu, the resentful members claimed that the state executive council violated internal democratic procedures and excluded grassroots stakeholders by holding the May 8 and May 13, 2025, congresses without following the proper procedures.
Barrister Ahmad Idriss Waziri, the PDP State Legal Adviser, spoke on behalf of the group and called the state leadership’s actions “undemocratic and unconstitutional.”
“The PDP Constitution is supreme and binding on all members,” Waziri stated.
“Unfortunately, what transpired during the ward and local government congresses was a clear breach of that constitution.”
He said that important stakeholders were purposefully left out of the congresses, including ward executives, local government executives from all 17 LGAs, and card-carrying members.
“This exclusion has created widespread discontent among loyal party members who feel their rights have been trampled upon,” he said.
“The congresses were hijacked by a few individuals within the state executive council, sidelining statutory delegates and undermining the democratic process.”
Waziri urged the party’s national and zonal leadership to act quickly in order to avoid the state congress, which is scheduled for May 17, 2025.
“We are calling on the national body to ensure transparency and fairness in the next phase of the process,” he said.
“If this is not addressed, it could spell deeper divisions within the party and threaten our chances in future elections.”
Similar worries were expressed by other executives who attended the meeting, cautioning that the PDP’s political base in Yobe may become weaker if grassroots members are more marginalized.
Ambassador Umar El-Gash, the departing PDP State Chairman, responded by defending the party’s actions and asserting that formal notices were properly disseminated via approved party channels.
“Due process was followed, and notifications were sent via official platforms,” El-Gash said.
“However, any aggrieved members have the right to seek redress through appropriate party mechanisms.”
