Youth group provides free medical services to over 200 residents in Nasarawa

A youth-led socio-developmental group, Afo Youth Mobility (AYM), has provided free medical services to over 200 residents in the Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The medical outreach, held in the Gada Hudu community, aimed to support the state government’s healthcare initiatives for rural dwellers.

AYM Chairman Dauda Yahaya-Kana explained that the initiative was designed to assist rural dwellers in diagnosing and treating illnesses. “The Afo Youth Mobility came up with this initiative to embark on the free medical outreach because we strongly believe that it is only through joint efforts that meaningful progress can be achieved in our communities and the state at large,” he said.

The medical outreach screened residents for various ailments, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, malaria, and high blood pressure. Free medications, such as anti-malarial drugs and vitamin C, were administered to support identified cases. Yahaya-Kana emphasized the need for unity and collective action on health-related matters among the Afo ethnic group

Organising Secretary Adakiri Halim-Orashi highlighted the importance of routine testing, noting that many individuals may be living with silent conditions that only medical screening can uncover. “The medical outreach brought to light the urgent need for regular and accessible healthcare, particularly in rural communities,” he said.

The Administrator of Udege Administrative Area Council, Commodore Yahaya Owuna (retd.), commended AYM’s community engagements, noting that the group’s efforts had contributed to restoring relative peace in the area. He described the outreach as long overdue and commended its inclusiveness.

The AYM medical team consisted of a wide range of professionals, including medical laboratory scientists, dieticians, and medical doctors. The group assured that it would continue to roll out laudable initiatives to address the needs and challenges of the Afo people.
