Zamfara education commissioner resigns because Gov Lawal defected to APC

Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in Zamfara State, has stepped down from the state executive council after Governor Dauda Lawal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement to Channels Television, Madawaki confirmed his resignation and explained that it stemmed from his loyalty to the PDP, which he intends to remain with.

“I only resigned because the governor is joining the APC. I am a PDP member, I have never been in the APC and I am not ready to be an APC member,” he said.

The ex-commissioner rejected allegations of being compelled to resign, asserting that his departure was voluntary and driven by personal conviction.

“The governor has never forced anyone to resign. Even during the stakeholders’ meeting, he made it clear that nobody would be forced to join the party. I only resigned because I believe it is the honourable thing to do,” he added.

According to Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Governor Lawal has accepted the resignation. He announced that Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, has been directed to immediately act as overseer of the Ministry of Education.

This development follows Governor Lawal’s defection from the PDP to the APC, along with his deputy, Mani Malam Mummuni, and several members of the state executive council, citing internal disagreements within the opposition party.

Shortly after the defection, a symbolic gesture took place as the PDP flag was taken down from the Zamfara Government House in front of the deputy governor and other cabinet members, marking a formal change of allegiance to the ruling party.
