Former Kano Central senatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, popularly known as AA Zaura, has vowed to bring the state’s three most powerful politicians—Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Ibrahim Shekarau—together.

Speaking on a local radio station’s political show, Zaura stressed that Kano’s advancement has been impeded by the trio’s long-standing political differences.

He maintained that maintaining their unity was crucial to the growth of the state and that political struggle in Kano should be motivated by the common good rather than individual interests.

“Opposition politics in Kano, as it is played today, is not beneficial. I am ready to work towards reconciling our three key leaders—Kwankwaso, Ganduje, and Shekarau. It should be about Kano, not personal interests. Once that is achieved, Lagos and other states will look to Kano for lessons in progressive politics,” Zaura said.

He pointed out that if the three previous governors banded together, Kano’s political climate may change from one marked by strife to one that places an emphasis on development, similar to the advancements made in states like Lagos.

Zaura’s comments coincide with several fruitless attempts to patch up the disagreement between Kwankwaso, the national head of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and Ganduje, the national chairman of the APC.

Political differences have impeded previous attempts at reconciliation; most recently, allies of Kwankwaso supported former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello to succeed Ganduje as APC national chairman, further straining ties.

Zaura’s appeal for unity is not unique. Other APC members have also pushed for harmony among Kano’s leading political heavyweights, including veteran politician Baffa Babba Danagundi and the party’s 2023 deputy governorship candidate, Murtala Sule Garo.

Kwankwaso, Ganduje and Shekarau, who have each held two terms as governor of Kano, are still important figures in the state’s politics even though they belong to opposing parties.
