1966 Coup: Bashir Ahmad Makes Unexpected Statement About Peter Obi

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bashir Ahmad, has said Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), should not be blamed for the 1966 coup.

Ahmad, a former presidential spokesperson, argued that Obi had no involvement in the coup and should not be held accountable for the incident because of his identity or background.

The APC chieftain was reacting to an interview granted by Obi on Arise TV on Thursday.

During the interview, the anchor reminded Obi that some people in Northern Nigeria had continued to harbour resentment against the Igbo over the killing of Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, during the 1966 coup.

The interviewer asked Obi how he would respond to a resident of Sokoto who still attributed the incident to the Igbo and was being asked to vote for him more than six decades later.

In his response, the former Anambra State governor said he could not be blamed for the 1966 coup because he was only about four years old when the event occurred.

Sharing a video clip from the interview on his official X handle, Ahmad said, “Nobody should be judged or held responsible for the wrongdoings of others.”

He further maintained that Obi should not be blamed for the events connected to the 1966 coup merely because of his identity or background, adding that the same standard should be applied to everyone.

“We must learn to judge people by their own actions, not by the actions of others,” he said.
