Former Arsenal and France star, Thierry Henry, has moved to clear the air over a remark he made concerning Nigeria during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Henry had been interacting with popular online streamer, iShowSpeed, who appeared in a unique outfit before the World Cup fixture between the United States and Paraguay, a match that ended in a 4-1 victory for the Americans.
The content creator arrived at the venue wearing a United States jersey paired with Nigerian-themed shorts, drawing attention from fans and pundits alike.
Reacting to the combination, Henry jokingly remarked that it was a sign of bad luck.
The comment quickly generated reactions, with some viewers interpreting it as a reference to Nigeria.
However, the former French international has now clarified his statement, insisting that his remark had nothing to do with Nigeria.
According to Henry, he was referring to the superstition of wearing apparel representing two different teams at the same time, which he described as unlucky in football circles.
The football icon stressed that his observation was solely about mixing the identities of two separate teams and was not intended as a criticism of Nigeria or its national team.
Henry’s clarification comes after the comment sparked discussions among football fans on social media during the World Cup tournament.
He said on social media: “I needed to clarify something because I don’t think people understand when you say stuff sometimes or when a joke is a joke.
”So I just spoke yesterday about the shorts of Nigeria and the top of the US. I just said to him that it is bad luck to break the set.
”Could have been the shorts of France, Italy or Spain, I would have said the same thing. I was just having a little joke with him, saying that it would be bad luck. Not Nigeria is bad luck, but to break the set, because you go as a set.
”I even said that I love Naija. And by the way, I do. I have respect for Nigeria and the people there. A lot of Arsenal fans, by the way, are out there, so don’t misunderstand that stuff, please.
”Nigeria is never bad luck. I was just saying breaking the set is bad luck with any other shorts.”
