2027: Christian Coalition Petition Trump, US Congress Over APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

A coalition of Christian and human rights organisations has submitted a petition to United States President Donald Trump, the US Congress and several diplomatic missions regarding the proposed continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

The organisations, operating under the platform of the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN), expressed concern that the arrangement could pose significant challenges for Christians nationwide, especially those residing in Northern Nigeria.

In the petition, signed by the coalition’s leadership and made available to journalists in Jos, Plateau State, the group appealed to the international community to closely monitor what it described as the deteriorating security situation affecting Christian populations.

According to the group, “the continuation of the Muslim-Muslim ticket by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima could further deepen religious divisions and political exclusion”.

CYAN maintained that the presidential ticket adopted in the 2023 election marked a departure from Nigeria’s longstanding practice of maintaining religious balance in the country’s highest political offices.

The coalition also faulted the Federal Government’s policy of rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant terrorists, arguing that individuals accused of terrorism should be prosecuted instead of benefiting from government-backed reintegration initiatives.

The petition further appealed to the US government to retain Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), insisting that any future review of the status should depend on independently verified progress in safeguarding Christian communities.

The group also called for transparent investigations into major attacks on Christian communities, including incidents in Plateau, Benue and other states, while urging sustained humanitarian assistance for displaced victims.

CYAN further requested an inquiry into alleged foreign involvement in Nigeria’s political process, claiming that certain Arab nations may be backing efforts to sustain the Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition stressed that Nigeria’s religious diversity should be adequately reflected in its political leadership and urged both domestic and international stakeholders to promote fairness, inclusiveness and equal protection for all citizens, irrespective of their faith.
