2027: PDP Chieftain Speaks on Wike’s Move, Says Party Members Left

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has faulted the decision of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to publicly declare support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Ulasi argued that Wike’s endorsement of Tinubu was inappropriate while he still occupies a prominent leadership position within the PDP.

According to him, although Wike has the constitutional right as a Nigerian citizen to support any candidate of his choice, publicly making such a declaration as a leading figure in the opposition party sends the wrong message to party faithful and supporters.

“I did say it was wrong for the FCT minister, being the national leader of the PDP, to prematurely declare four months ago for Tinubu, even though he is serving under his government,” Ulasi said.

He argued that Wike could have delayed making his position public until the election period was much closer, when he could then explain the reasons behind his support for the President.

Ulasi maintained that while Wike cannot be denied the constitutional right to back Tinubu, openly doing so as a senior PDP leader is discouraging to party members who are expected to unite behind the opposition ahead of future elections.

The PDP chieftain’s comments come amid increasing public debate over Wike’s close ties with the Tinubu administration despite his continued status as a prominent figure within the opposition party.
