A professor from Nigeria who has not yet been named has been arrested on suspicion of helping immigrants from Africa enter illegally and travel through Russia to nations that are members of the European Union.
This comes after the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia announced on Thursday that its operatives had broken up a network of smugglers of migrants that was purportedly run by a professor at a university in Nigeria.
The alleged commander is a prominent lecturer at the engineering academy of the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), according to the Moscow Times.
The operation, according to the FSB, was aimed at an interregional organisation that helped immigrants from Africa enter illegally and travel through Russia to nations in the European Union, according to the Moscow Times.
The name of the aforementioned Nigerian professor remained anonymous, but the FSB did disclose the arrest of five key members of the smuggling network, including citizens of Russia, Nigeria, and Ukraine.
The FSB also revealed that it was still conducting investigations to find more accomplices.
The smuggling gang is charged with using fictitious Russian residency permits and visas to generate at least $650,000 since 2021.
