Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has asked Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to obey court orders in order to avert future breakdowns of law and order in the state and potential chaos.
However, after local council secretariats were set on fire, the state began to stabilise somewhat, and Fubara pledged to apprehend and prosecute the people who were funding the political thugs and arsonists.
Following a period of turmoil, Fubara has warned that his administration will not accept political thuggery and acts of violence that undermine the state’s stability and harm commercial interests.
Wike held the governor accountable for breaking the terms of the deal they made with President Bola Tinubu to end the state’s political crisis.
Speaking yesterday on Channels TV’s “Politics Today” live program, the minister hinted that his lawyers would file a court case to halt Fubara’s judicial panel of inquiry, which was established to look into the reasons behind the chaos that reportedly resulted in five deaths, numerous injuries, and the destruction of properties valued at billions of naira.
Wike said: “The governor has said that he knew those who masterminded the mayhem. He fingered the opposition for the attack. Why then waste the public fund to investigate what you said you know?”
He pointed the finger of the situation at the House of Assembly Speaker’s impeachment instead of claiming to have a personal grievance against the governor or to be making any demands of him.
He denied betraying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and stated that his party’s opposition to equity, justice, and fairness was the reason he backed the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023.
CHECKS by ZINGTIE showed that the elected council chairmen resumed work, yesterday, at their respective council secretariats with moderate security presence.
The governor promised that steps will be made to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the burning of the local council secretariats in Eleme, Emohua, and Ikwerre, in collaboration with the police and the Directorate of State Services (DSS).
Fubara provided the guarantee yesterday at Government House in Port Harcourt during the oath-taking ceremony for four new commissioners to the State Executive Council (SEC).
Israel Ngbuelu, Evans Bipi, and Otamiri Ngubo Benibo Anabraba are the new commissioners.
He remembered that on October 6, 2024, at the swearing-in of the newly elected local council chairmen, he had issued a warning about possible violence from irate people.
“I had foreseen this unrest. Some individuals, unhappy with the election outcome, are going to great lengths to disrupt peace in Rivers,” Fubara said.
He urged the residents of Rivers to maintain their composure while the authorities conducted their investigation, vowing that the offenders would face consequences.
He understood the dissatisfaction of Rivers residents but applauded them for their composure in the face of violence. He reaffirmed his dedication to leading in a nonviolent manner and forbade taking revenge on the assailants.
“We are carrying a basket of precious eggs, and we must handle it with care and wisdom,” Fubara said, urging the people to prioritise peace over conflict. He emphasised that engaging in violence would only lead to further losses for the state.
The governor also spoke against oil theft, cautioning that unbridled theft and pipeline damage might have a catastrophic effect on Nigeria’s economy. He noted that the country’s demands could not be met by the oil money alone, thus he urged for coordinated work to enhance output.
“Our focus must remain on curbing oil theft and ensuring pipeline security. Only then will revenues increase, allowing us to fund critical development projects for Rivers,” the governor stated.
