A Nigerian mother has sparked an online conversation after confronting her 12-year-old daughter over what she described as disobedience, disrespect and inappropriate use of social media.

In a stern message directed at the girl, the mother explained that she had purchased a phone for her daughter with clear instructions that it was to be used strictly for WhatsApp.

However, she said she later confiscated the device after discovering that the child had installed TikTok despite being warned against doing so.

The mother said her decision was also motivated by concerns about her daughter’s safety online, particularly the possibility of unwanted interactions with adult men through social media platforms.

She also addressed her daughter’s apparent desire to have the same things as other children, explaining that the family’s financial situation did not allow them to live beyond their means.

She said, “I can’t promise to give you fun and happiness like other kids because we cannot leave above our means. But I have never been wicked to you and you know it.”

The woman further reminded her daughter of the sacrifices she had made for her and stressed that she expected the girl to respect the instructions given to her while living under her care.

She added, “As far as you’re under my roof, you’ll take instructions if not we will go down together.”

The mother also told the teenager that if she considered herself mature enough to take care of herself, she could leave the house and stay with her father.

The exchange has renewed conversations about parenting, discipline and the challenges of allowing children to use social media while protecting them from potential dangers online.

It has also highlighted the difficulties parents face in balancing children’s desire for independence with household rules, financial limitations and concerns over online safety.

The full circumstances surrounding the disagreement, including the daughter’s response, were not disclosed.
