Following his alleged wrongful detention, embattled Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has filed a lawsuit against Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
According to reporters, Darlington’s remarks regarding artist Burna Boy led to his arrest and detention by the police.
He was charged with cyberstalking and defaming Burna Boy.
On Monday, December 23, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail; notwithstanding, the police continued to hold him.
In a video posted on social media in response to his ongoing imprisonment, Darlington’s attorney charged Burna Boy with paying the police to hold him.
However, the judge ordered the police to free Darlington on Monday, January 6, 2025.
The rapper accused the IGP of violating his rights and filed a N300 million lawsuit against them a few hours after the court order.
The singer’s lawsuit against the police for violating her fundamental rights was scheduled to be heard by a Federal High Court in Abuja on January 13.
The court’s ruling came after Abubakar Marshal, Speed Darlington’s attorney, asked for an adjournment so that police attorney Garba Audu could examine and comment on the lawsuit.
