Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, has urged members to reaffirm their dedication to tackling Nigeria’s issues by emphasising legislative changes and national development.
When the Senate reconvened following the Yuletide and New Year’s holidays, the Senate President made the request at a plenary session on Tuesday.
In his speech, “Rising to the Greatness of Our Calling,” Akpabio emphasised the necessity of a united front in order to turn Nigeria into a country of development and optimism.
He said, “As we embark on this new legislative year, I urge us all to include in our New Year resolutions a renewed commitment to the service of our great nation, Nigeria.”
Akpabio emphasised the significance of the national budget, saying it reflects the dreams and ambitions of millions of Nigerians and is more than just a financial document.
“We must ensure that every item within it reflects the collective dreams of our people and serves as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice,” he stated.
The need of finishing electoral changes before the next election cycle was also emphasised by the Senate President.
“Electoral reform is not just a legislative duty; it is a moral imperative,”noting that a transparent and credible electoral system is essential for the country’s democratic stability.
The Senate President urged fervent prayers for peace and unity while discussing the wider issues confronting Nigeria.
He also exhorted his colleagues to see the value of group intercession in bringing the country’s leaders and citizens together.
In his closing remarks, Akpabio urged the senators to take up the challenge, strive for greatness, and never waver in their commitment to the development of the country.
“Our work here is not just about legislation; it is about shaping the future of a nation and leaving a legacy for generations to come’.
“We are at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, a time that demands bold action and visionary leadership, History is calling on us to make a difference to write a new narrative for our nation, one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities,” Akpabio maintained.
He urged his colleagues to come together with a shared goal and work for the common good, expressing confidence for the upcoming legislative year.
