Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the deputy governor of Ogun State, barely avoided being attacked by demonstrators in the state capital, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
When the deputy governor’s convoy came across the demonstrating students, it was on its way to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta, to represent Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day festivities.
With gunshots audible in the background, a video that has gone viral on social media shows the deputy governor’s convoy trying to alter their course amidst the demonstration.
According to reports, the students were from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), and they were carrying sticks and other weapons.
According to a statement issued by Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, the students who were protesting grew more hostile after learning that the deputy governor was in the convoy.
A diversion to the deputy governor’s lodge was necessary to allow the demonstrators to pass peacefully after the students tried to disband the caravan.
The statement also disclosed that security personnel were hurt during the event, and several of the deputy governor’s protection vehicles were destroyed.
Contrary to the rumours circulating in the media, the press statement also stated that “Noteworthy is that there was obstruction of Vehicular movement, while some of her security vehicle was damaged and her security operatives were also hurt in the process of maintaining law and order contrary to the news making rounds in the press.”
