The Lagos State House of Assembly has spoken out over the rumor that 27 of its members had defected to the opposition Labour Party (LP) from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ogundipe Olukayode, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, declared the story to be false.
He asserts that the public should ignore such “false stories” and “misleading stories.”
“These events in no way suggest any intention by members to leave the party. We emphasise, without any ambiguity, that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection.
“We were elected under the leadership of the ruling party. The ruling party remains united and focused on delivering its mandate to the people of Lagos State. The falsehood being spread originates from agents of destabilisation who seek to create unnecessary tension and division within the Assembly,” the Assembly said.
The Assembly clarified that the alleged defection was intended to “sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State,” notwithstanding rumors that the APC House members had found comfort in LP.
Armed security officers from the Department of State Services, or DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force raided the sacred chamber earlier this week, as ZINGTIE reported.
They allegedly arrived to prevent Mojisola Meranda, the recently elected Speaker, from entering the Assembly until several hours later.
When parliamentarians who supported her passed a vote of confidence in her, Meranda broke down in tears when she finally presided over plenary.
A leadership battle in the state legislature has been dubbed the “mother of all political crises” that the nation is now experiencing.
It all began when Meranda was elected speaker of the Assembly and Mudashiru Obasa was removed.
Obasa has challenged the procedure in court, claiming that his removal did not adhere to due process.
The Lagos Assembly, however, maintains that no outside forces are participating in the struggle for leadership.
