Well-known Nollywood star Femi Branch has opened up about the origin of his widely recognized stage name, revealing that it was born out of a personal rift with his father.
During a conversation on Oyinmomo TV, the actor explained that the disagreement with his father led him to drop his paternal surname, Osunkoya, and instead take on the name “Branch,” which was influenced by scripture.
According to Femi, the disagreement began when he chose not to follow his father’s advice to move overseas.
This decision created a deep divide between them, resulting in years of silence. During this estrangement, he decided to distance himself further by changing his surname.
He selected “Branch” due to its biblical meaning Jesus is described as the “Branch of life” in the scriptures, a phrase that struck a strong spiritual chord with him. Over time, the name stuck, and he became known in the film world as Femi Branch, leaving behind the name Femi Osunkoya.
He said: “I didn’t speak with my dad for many years. He wanted me to travel abroad, but I refused and didn’t go.
This led to our fight, so I changed my surname from Osunkoya to Branch. I got the name from the book of Jeremiah and Isaiah. But we later settled and reconciled. Then I adopted my name back.”
