A new UEFA rule gives Chelsea the option to choose between competing in the Champions League or the Europa League.

Currently, the Blues are battling to secure a Champions League spot by finishing in the Premier League’s top five. However, they have the option to bypass their position, thanks to a UEFA regulation that would become applicable if they win the Europa Conference League.

Under the leadership of Enzo Maresca, Chelsea remain in the top five, but they are only ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference, with Nottingham Forest trailing by just one point in seventh place.

Chelsea will aim to maintain their position with upcoming matches against Manchester United and Forest. However, even if they manage to stay in the top five, they might have some flexibility.

If Chelsea win the Europa Conference League by defeating Real Betis in the final, they could still qualify for the Europa League.

If they secure both a Champions League spot and the silverware, the new rule would allow them to choose between participating in the Champions League or entering the Europa League’s group stage.

While it’s unlikely Chelsea would choose the Europa League over the Champions League, the option exists because certain domestic qualification spots require teams to go through a qualification round.
