Three individuals have reportedly lost their lives in a fresh assault by suspected armed herders in Yelewatta, a border settlement within Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Sources indicated that the incident occurred on Saturday evening when the attackers, armed with heavy weapons, stormed the community.

A local resident, who requested anonymity, revealed that the assailants arrived around midnight, catching villagers off guard as most were asleep.

“The invaders started silently by knocking at people’s doors and when you open the door, they kill everyone at sight by slaughtering and shooting.

“So far, dead bodies of a family of three who were brutally murdered in their room have been recovered.

“Mr Ulam Udzer(Father) Terseer Ulam (Son) and a little baby of about two years were slaughtered.

“The wife of the deceased was also shot at but is yet to give up the ghost”, a source said.

“However, we thank the Nigeria Police force, Benue State Civil protection guard and the Executive Chairman of Guma local government council and ALGON Chairman Hon. Orwough Maurice for the prompt response which has restored peace in the area for now,” he added.

However, the actual number of casualties remains uncertain.

Yelewatta, the location of the incident, lies along the Makurdi–Lafia highway.

Attempts to obtain an official confirmation from the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time this report was filed.
