Wole Adesina’s wing of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has warned of two troubling events that endanger the party’s unity and integrity.

In a statement released on Monday, Alfa Mohammed, the faction’s national publicity secretary, denounced the invasion of resentful politicians who have united to form a coalition with the goal of ousting President Bola Tinubu without offering a definitive alternative vision for Nigeria’s change.

“The influx of some aggrieved politicians in a desperate coalition to ‘send President Bola Ahmed Tinubu back to Lagos’ without showcasing any clear-cut alternative agenda for Nigeria’s transformation is disturbing,” Mohammed said.

“The party is not for sale or lease to any group and will not be part of any anti-government plots or coalition that lacks a clear alternative agenda for Nigeria’s transformation.”

The faction promised to keep up positive interactions with the federal government and hold it responsible, while separating from any coalition that would try to overthrow the government and thwart the will of Nigerian voters in the general elections of 2023.

Additionally, the faction called on SDP leaders around the country to oppose any efforts to usurp their posts.

It further called on them to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities, asking party members and supporters to remain calm, as attempts to reclaim full recognition from INEC are ongoing.

“We call on SDP leaders at all levels to resist any attempt to usurp their leadership and report such actions to the appropriate authorities, while leaving the party’s doors open for genuinely intentioned new members,” he added.

The Adesina-led NEC also dismissed what it described as the illegal substitution of constitutionally authorized state executives of the SDP by the coalition group, in coordination with a rival faction of the party.

The faction compared the current state of affairs to a comparable crisis in 2019, when Prof. Jerry Gana’s Peoples Democratic Party defectors tried to seize control of the party’s leadership.
