The arrest of a suspected Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) member in relation to the shooting death of a 17-year-old kid in the Itapo neighborhood of Epe Local Government has been verified by the Lagos State Police Command.
Benjamin Hundeyin, a police spokeswoman, announced the development Thursday, saying that the suspect—whose identity has not been revealed—had been taken into custody and sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department, or SCID, for additional investigation.
The adolescent was fatally shot by the OPC member when he allegedly opened fire on him at around three in the am on Monday before escaping the scene.
The Epe community was outraged by the killing. According to reports, irate locals and young people protested by marching through the town carrying the victim’s body from Itapo in order to seek justice.
Security forces quickly intervened as a result of the rally, which increased tension in the region. According to reports, officers dispersed the throng and restored order by using warning shots and tear gas. Later, the remains of the victim were recovered and brought to a hospital for the required treatments.
Police officials have now confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that the investigation is still ongoing, following the start of a manhunt earlier this week.
