The Heart Recovery Foundation (HRF) has called on the government to introduce a 30% subsidy on heart surgeries to alleviate the financial burden on patients with life-threatening cardiovascular conditions. According to the organisation, thousands of Nigerians cannot afford critical heart procedures, and government support could save countless lives.

Gilbert Kiaka Goodnews, Founder of HRF, made the appeal during an awareness campaign at Government Secondary School in Abuja. He shared his personal experience of surviving a severe heart defect corrected through surgery in India. “The prevalence of heart defects is widespread, and most of these children do not have access to medical diagnosis,” he said.
Goodnews emphasised the need for government support, stating, “Heart surgeries are very expensive. Most parents cannot afford them. If the government can subsidise even 30%, it would make a huge difference.” He added that the condition is a birth defect, not caused by lifestyle choices, and the government must step in to support affected children
Dr. James Abalaka, director of funds in the office of the accountant-general of the federation, supported the call for government intervention. “The cost of heart treatment is enormous. If the government subsidises it, things will improve. Many people can’t even afford to get a diagnosis, let alone treatment,” he said.
Suleiman Haruna, chairman of HRF, highlighted the rising cases of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria. “In Nigeria, cardiovascular diseases are rising, and stress among young people is often overlooked. Did you know that poor diet, inactivity, and unchecked stress today can shadow your future?” he asked.
The foundation has identified over 50 children with heart defects and plans to reach 200 schools across Abuja.
