A member of the House of Representatives, Solomon Wombo, has disclosed that 22 bodies have been recovered following a deadly attack on communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
Wombo, who represents the Logo-Ukum-Katsina Ala Federal Constituency, said the bodies were recovered from the affected Mbaterem communities after the violence.
The attack reportedly occurred around 5am on Sunday when armed herdsmen invaded Ayaba, Ukpen, Bom, Abaoajio and Yina communities.
Several residents were reportedly killed during the assault, while others sustained injuries and were displaced from their homes.
Reacting to the incident, Wombo condemned the killings, describing the attack as inhuman, unjustifiable and unacceptable.
The lawmaker urged security agencies and other relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the violence, apprehend them and ensure that they are brought to justice.
He also appealed to residents of the affected communities to remain calm and law-abiding while exercising vigilance in the aftermath of the attack.
Wombo warned residents against resorting to reprisals, stressing that retaliatory violence could lead to further loss of lives and deepen the cycle of bloodshed.
“We must pursue justice through lawful and legitimate means,” he advised.
The lawmaker extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, while also sympathising with those who sustained injuries or were forced to flee their homes.
