On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iran and Israel to consider reaching a peace agreement, although he hinted that the two nations might have to engage in direct conflict before any resolution is possible.

Trump made the remarks while speaking to journalists amid renewed missile exchanges between Israel and Iran, as both countries ramped up threats in a conflict that appears to be escalating.

“I think it’s time for a deal. But sometimes they have to fight it out, but we’re going to see what happens,” Trump said, speaking at the White House before heading to Canada to take part in a G7 summit.

Following years of hostility marked by indirect confrontations and secret operations, the latest flare-up has seen Israel and Iran engage each other more openly than ever before. This sudden escalation has raised fears of a prolonged and widespread war potentially engulfing the Middle East.

The hostilities reportedly began on Friday when Israel carried out a series of strikes that targeted high-ranking military figures, nuclear experts, and strategic sites, including military installations, nuclear facilities, and civilian areas.

When questioned about whether he had requested Israel to hold back on its air raids over Iran, Trump chose not to respond.

Earlier, a senior American official claimed that Trump had blocked a proposal by Israel to eliminate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
