The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) notification of its approaching 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

INEC’s rejection was based on a failure to follow protocol.

INEC said that the party’s notice lacked the necessary endorsement in a letter dated June 13, 2025, that was sent to the PDP National Chairman.

Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, the Acting Secretary of INEC, signed the letter, which claimed that the notice was in violation of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

In particular, INEC cited Part 2(12)3, which requires that “the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission.”

The letter reads partly: “The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance… Be guided.”

The PDP notified INEC on May 30, 2025, that it was prepared to have its NEC meeting at its Abuja National Secretariat.

Only Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum signed the notice that the PDP submitted within the legally mandated 21-day period; National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu did not co-sign it.
