The Federal Government has invested over N200 billion in the agricultural sector to enhance food production and ensure national food security. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, revealed that the ministry has also distributed free fertilizers worth N2.15 million to support farmers across the country.

Kyari commended the Government of The Gambia for seeking a partnership with Nigeria to improve food production and economic growth. He noted that Nigeria’s journey towards food sufficiency has not been easy, but significant progress has been made with the support of development partners like the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Bank

The minister highlighted the importance of attracting youth into the sector, saying, “We have a huge capacity within our youths, but because of the laborious nature involved, it scares away our youths.” He also celebrated advancements in rice and wheat cultivation, pointing to successful research outcomes.

Kyari stated, “When President Bola Tinubu came into power in 2023, he was committed to making sure that Nigeria is food secured, which propelled him to give a marching order that ‘we must achieve food security and food sovereignty’.”

The minister also emphasized the significance of the outgrower scheme in empowering small-scale farmers, saying, “The outgrower scheme is a short-term scheme between planting and harvesting (which is within 4-5 months), so there is no long-term investment.”

A delegation from The Gambia, led by Minister Dembal Sabally, visited Nigeria to observe rice cultivation and irrigation methods, with plans to replicate the model in their country. Sabally expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s agricultural progress, noting that Gambia currently imports over 80% of its rice, which severely impacts the country’s economy.
