In response to the recent massacre in Yelwata, Benue State, the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (ASUU-MOAUM), has urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly apprehend those behind the killings.
Reports indicate that nearly 200 individuals were killed during a coordinated assault on the Yelwata community by suspected armed herdsmen two weekends ago.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the union’s Chairperson and Secretary, Comrades Ali Sule Ako and Daniel Chile, firmly condemned the incident and called on authorities to ensure the attackers face justice promptly.
The union voiced alarm over the continued pattern of violent assaults across Benue communities, warning that the inability of the government to curb these atrocities could severely impact food production and threaten national food security.
ASUU-MOAUM also appealed to both federal and state governments to fulfill their constitutional duty of safeguarding the lives and properties of citizens particularly those living in rural and at-risk areas.
They further urged security forces to respond with speed, integrity, and fairness to stop further violence, stressing that those behind the killings in Benue must be located and prosecuted without delay.
