Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called for the establishment of more states in the South East to correct what he described as an imbalance in Nigeria’s geo-political structure.
He made this call while hosting members of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The appeal was detailed in a statement released on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, and shared with journalists in Abakaliki.
“To end regional squabbles permanently, I urge the National Assembly to ensure marginalization and structural imbalances are constitutionally addressed.
“Out of the six geo-political zones in the country, only this region has five states, a development that can trigger resentment amongst the people,” he said.
The governor, emphasizing the importance of the constitutional review, also recommended that the presidency be rotated among all six geo-political zones to foster fairness and inclusion.
“That the South East geo-political zone has not occupied the position of the President since 1999 is an injustice.
“What is the essence of the geo-political zone structure if the office of the president cannot be tested by all the zones?” The Governor queried.
He further advocated for the amendment of Section 308 of the constitution to extend immunity to additional key officials including the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as Speakers and their deputies in State Assemblies.
Additionally, Governor Nwifuru reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, countering claims that governors would abuse such power if it were granted.
In his remarks, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who led the committee and serves as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, said the delegation was in the region to conduct a public hearing as part of the constitutional amendment process.
“Due to growing concerns that there is need to further review the constitution to meet the demands of Nigerians, the public hearing was conducted.

“I don’t need to tell you much about it because in the previous exercises, you participated actively as the then speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly,” he said.
He assured that the committee would ensure that no region of the country is left behind in the ongoing constitutional review efforts.
