The Nigeria Chapter of the International Human Rights Commission – Rescue for the Future (IHRC-RFT) has expressed concern over the potential closure of markets in Yobe and Borno States due to threats of bomb attacks, cautioning that such actions could worsen economic difficulties and poverty in the area.

In a statement endorsed by the IHRC-RFT Nigeria Country Director, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the organization recognized the necessity of protecting lives and property but stressed that indefinitely shutting down markets is not a viable long-term solution to the security crisis.

“We commend the intention behind the closures, which are to protect lives, but shutting down markets only intensifies poverty and fails to address the core issues of insecurity,” the statement read.

Instead, the organization advised the use of advanced security strategies, such as the installation of CCTV cameras, deployment of trained security officers, utilization of sniffer dogs, and the placement of modern scanning tools at strategic market entry and exit points.

Additionally, IHRC urged authorities to invest more in intelligence-gathering and build strong partnerships with communities to detect and prevent threats before they escalate.

The group also appealed to security operatives to initiate public sensitization efforts to help both traders and locals identify and report suspicious behavior without putting themselves at risk.

“Thousands of Nigerians depend on daily trade for survival. Shutting down markets not only disrupts livelihoods but violates basic human rights,” Amb. Adamu stated, referring to Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life and security, along with Article 23, which affirms the right to work and earn a living.

IHRC-RFT emphasized the need for a security approach centered around community engagement, encouraging close cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local residents to strengthen trust and establish effective early warning systems.

In closing, the organization reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with government institutions and communities by offering training, advocacy, and technical expertise.

“We call on all stakeholders to handle this issue with empathy and foresight. Security is essential, but it must not come at the expense of livelihoods,” the statement added.
