A mother from Kitui named Beatrice Mutuku has talked of a horrific incident that still troubled her: a dead body, a closed restroom, and a cruel Saudi boss.
She and her companion Sharmin had traveled to Saudi Arabia to work as caregivers. However, everything changed one afternoon. Beatrice heard the child sobbing and a loud crash. She yelled, and Sharmin’s trembling voice returned:
“I’m going to die today.”
She never heard from her again.
Her supervisor opened the door a few moments later. Beatrice almost passed out when she saw that the child was bleeding and Sharmin was laying still in a pool of blood.
Unbelievably, Beatrice was left alone in the house with the body after the employer and his wife removed the child.
However, things worsened.
“I drank toilet water to survive. I couldn’t sleep. The smell of her body getting worse each hour,” she said.
When the boss returned, she was made to drag Sharmin’s body into the restroom. He pummeled Beatrice until she complied after she refused. He then imprisoned her there for three days along with the corpse.
Three days later, the boss came back with a cunning scheme. He instructed her to place the body in trash bags and dispose of it in a wilderness. Beatrice obeyed, trembling and weak, merely to survive.
“I was tired, hungry, and scared. But I had no choice.”
Beatrice’s terrifying tale serves as a sobering reminder of the violence, dread, and silence that some migrant workers experience overseas.
